Plant Health supervises quarantine pests absent in the country

Quarantine pests are a threat to Dominican crops, which is why authorities keep special control and surveillance of almost a dozen insects, fungi, diseases, viruses, and rodents that are present in other countries and that can enter Dominican soil. This mainly happens on the border with Haiti, which produces most of the food consumed nationally and for export, so the care of crops is a vital task for the Department of Plant Health of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The director of Plant Health, Rosa Lazala, highlighted that from 2020 to date, only two pests of economic importance for the country have been detected: the Mediterranean Fly (Ceratitis capitata), discovered in Punta Cana, and the Asian Thrips of the bean flower (Megalorutrips Usitatus), in the San Juan Valley. Both are under control.
