VBT figures week 2:

Belgium: Tomato price drops below 2 euros

The second week of January has resulted in a lower average price for cucumber and tomato at the VBT auctions. This makes the tomato price slightly behind week 2 of last year. The cucumber price is still higher. In both cases, the price is still well above the five-year average.

The average price for loose tomatoes is 1.794 euros per kilo, and for vine tomatoes, it's 1.977 euros.

The average unit price for a cucumber in week 2 stands at 71.2 euro cents.

The price of lettuce also dropped slightly. As with cucumber and tomato, the average price in week 2 is still above the five-year average, and in the case of lettuce, also above the price in week 2 of 2021 and 2022.

The average unit price for lettuce in week 2 is 60.2 euro cents.

The strawberry price in 2024 started at a lower price level than the previous two years. Compared to week 1, the price did rise slightly, to around 8.73 euros. This winter, more growers have started a lit winter cultivation, as can also be seen in cucumber and tomato.

The average price for strawberries in week 2 of 2024 is lower than the past two years.
