In 2023, the average price of Andalusian pepper, from origin to destination, increased by up to 118%

According to a report prepared by Hortoinfo based on data from the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de Andalucía, there's a notable difference between the average price that Andalusian producers are paid for their greenhouse peppers and the price that wholesalers charged for this product. During 2023, the gap between these prices peaked at 118%, and its annual average stood at 65%.

In 2023, the average price paid to producers for peppers, which are mainly grown in greenhouses in the province of Almeria, was €1.21/kg. Meanwhile, the average price charged by wholesalers was 2 euro/kg, i.e., €0.79/kg more than the average price paid to farmers.

The monthly analysis reveals that the difference peaked in June when it reached 118%, as wholesalers charged €1.05/kg more than what producers were paid. The lowest difference was 25%, and it took place in February when producers were paid an average of €2.08/kg and wholesalers charged €2.61/kg.

In detail, the monthly evolution of this gap in 2023 was 45% in January, 25% in February, 43% in March, 72% in April, 109% in May, 118% in June, 57% in July, 61% in August, 69% in September, 100% in October, 65% in November, and 87% in December.
