The greenhouse complex in Ekibastuz is significantly increasing its output, supplying produce directly to the northern regions of Kazakhstan. Despite expansion plans, legislative shortcomings pose a serious challenge.
Gizat Yelemesov, an agronomist with experience from Dutch specialists, is committed to self-sufficiency and knowledge-sharing. With 300 employees, the complex harvests over 1,000 tons of tomatoes and cucumbers annually, with additional crops like bell peppers and aubergines in the summer. Yelemesov's recent visit to Dutch companies revealed similarities in techniques.
Spanning 30 hectares, the complex strategically located near the Ekibastuz GRES-1 benefits from cheap electricity. However, the energy-intensive facility faces challenges, especially in winter, leading to unforeseen electricity consumption and hefty fines. Despite these issues, the complex supplies 90% of its vegetables to the domestic market, meeting the growing demand for locally produced tomatoes and cucumbers, which remain more affordable than imported alternatives.
