The state of Upper Austria awarded the 'Energy Star' state energy prize to pioneers of the energy transition. BIOhof Geinberg received the award in the "Energy Transition in Nutrition" category. The organic farm in Geinberg operates a particularly sustainable greenhouse with a total area of 11.8 hectares for the organic cultivation of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Heating is provided 100 percent by geothermal energy from the existing Geinberg geothermal source, more precisely from residual heat from the return flow from the Geinberg thermal spa and the district heating network.
The vegetables produced there are destined exclusively for the Austrian market. The use of geothermal energy for heating saves around 5.5 million liters of crude oil or around 5.5 million cubic meters of natural gas. A photovoltaic system with an output of 424 kW is also installed on the roofs of the halls, which covers electricity consumption and feeds the surplus into the grid. The overall approach of using geothermal energy, rainwater instead of drinking water, and beneficial organisms instead of chemicals to combat pests makes this project unique.
