Agro-food Cooperatives Extremadura's Tomato Industry Working Group has updated its study on the production costs of tomato cultivation in the region. The study is based on the data recorded this year, in which 1.9 million tons have been harvested.
This study was carried out in collaboration with the OPFH associated with Agro-food Cooperatives Extremadura. The study estimates 12,540 euros of production cost per hectare of tomato, which represents an increase of 9.5% compared to the previous year when it was estimated at 11,448 euros.
"So, the cost to grow a ton of tomato will rise during the next campaign to 144.85 euros, taking into account the average yield of this year, which has been 86,570 kilos per hectare. This cost represents a 4.32% increase compared to this past campaign, whose costs amounted to 138.85 euros per ton of tomato for industry".
"To carry out this study, Agro-food Cooperatives Extremadura has taken into account the direct and indirect costs that Extremaduran growers have when growing tomatoes, which have increased by 9.5% in the last year".
"Specifically, direct costs go from 8,628 euros per hectare in the previous campaign to 9,527 euros in this campaign, representing an increase of 10.4%. This mainly highlights the rising prices of phytosanitary products by 23.2%; labor and treatments too increased by 14.4%; on the other hand, seeds and plants by 12.1%".
"The indirect costs of tomato cultivation have grown by 8.6%, becoming 2,258 euros per hectare."
"Agro-food Cooperatives Extremadura has sent this study to the Agricultural Price Observatory, whose objective is to provide information that affects the management of agricultural and livestock crops in the region based on real knowledge of field production practices and production costs associated with them."
