Research into data center heat leads to creation of energy cooperative PrimA4a

Horticultural companies in PrimA4a jointly established the PrimA4a energy cooperative on Friday, October 27. The cooperative is a collaboration of the greenhouse horticulture companies in the area and aims to provide the companies with sustainable energy at competitive prices and with high security of supply. Some 10 companies with a combined cultivation area of about 100 hectares have joined the cooperative.

Horticultural entrepreneurs PrimA4a establish energy cooperative.

The founding meeting took place at Schenkeveld Schiphol. The new chairman of the cooperative, Jacco Besuijen, said: "By establishing the PrimA4a energy cooperative, the horticultural greenhouse businesses in the area are joining forces to work together on energy transition. The concrete reason for setting up the cooperative is a study we conducted into the application of data center heat that offers prospects for a feasible project. In the coming period, we will work with a heat operator and a data center to further investigate and develop the case. If everything goes according to plan, sustainable heat could be available to our members by 2026."

The establishment of the PrimA4a Energy Cooperative is a result of the joint effort of Greenport Aalsmeer and Horticulture Netherlands with the horticultural companies. Jeroen Larrivee, energy transition coordinator at Greenport Aalsmeer: "In 2021, together with Glastuinbouw Nederland, we mapped the energy profiles of all companies in Greenport Aalsmeer. Based on this information, we started carrying out explorations into the incorporation of both data center heat and geothermal heat from Rijnland."

Hans van den Berg of Horticulture Netherlands congratulates the entrepreneurs in PrimA4a on establishing the Energy Cooperative. "From Glastuinbouw Nederland, we support energy cooperatives in their establishment and further operations. To realize acceleration in the energy transition in this region and meet sectoral targets, measures are needed at the area level."
