The specialists from the Severomorsk interregional branch of the Rosselkhoznadzor have identified the Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) in a batch of tomatoes brought to Murmansk. The owner of the products received a warning, telling them it's not allowed to break the rules. This is to stop and prevent the sale of products that don't comply with quarantine phytosanitary regulations.
"The ToBRFV is widespread in Europe, China, the United States, and Mexico. Russia became aware of this virus only a few years ago, and in 2021, it was diagnosed in several greenhouse complexes," noted the agency's press service. Various factors influence the development and intensity of symptoms. Bumblebees can spread the ToBRFV virus among tomatoes, and it can also be transmitted by whiteflies and thrips or through contaminated seeds. Additionally, the virus can be mechanically transmitted.
The virus interacts with other pathogens. Infected tomato plants exhibit symptoms such as chlorosis, mosaic patterns, and spotting on leaves. Brown necrotic lesions can appear on stems, calyxes, and pedicels. Infected fruits may carry latent infections and serve as a source of infection, affecting other fruits.
