Tomato most popular veg in New Zealand, kale least enjoyed

As the results of New Zealand’s very first VegElection are in, we now know what the nation’s favorite and most despised vegetables are. At the start of voting in September, seed producer and garden supply retailer Yates kicked off a campaign with the idea for an election to decide the country’s top vegetables.

And there is a clear winner: it is the common tomato. It topped the polls, with some 4,500 people casting their votes from across New Zealand. With a clear majority, the tomato was declared a versatile and widely used ingredient in salads, sauces, and sandwiches, making them a popular choice for many people.

The Brussels sprout did not get the title of ‘Most Hated Vege’; that dubious honor was taken by the much-criticized kale. Although this veg reached superfood status a few years ago due to its range of beneficial nutrients, its strong flavor and texture have provided a challenge for some.
