Irish grocery spending up by 13% in 2023, Says HelloFresh
The average weekly grocery spend in Ireland has increased by 13%, from €91.38 in 2022 to €105.85 in 2023, a new survey from HelloFresh has found. This adds up to €752 over the entire year and is the equivalent of a year's worth of weekly yoga classes, a top-of-the-line bike, or a new smartphone, HelloFresh added.

UK: Asda owners in talks over £500mln portfolio sale
Mohsin and Zuber Issa, backed by TDR Capital, are said to be in talks with an Australian finance house for a deal worth about £500mln. Macquarie Asset Management is close to buying the ground rent leases of about 50 Asda stores in Britain, with a provision included to allow Asda to reassume ownership for a small amount at the end of the 50-year term, React News reported.

Woolworths confirms controversial new trial in fruit and veg aisle, sparking outrage
Woolworths supermarket has confirmed a major change to the fresh produce aisle in selected stores. The retail giant has removed all single-use plastic fruit and vegetable bags from 12 stores in a new six-week trial. Woolworths said it is testing a variety of bagging options in the stores - that are all in Western Australia - including brown paper bags and reusable bags that are available for purchase.

REMA 1000 gets the nod to acquire Aldi stores in Denmark
Danish competition authorities have approved REMA 1000's acquisition of 114 Aldi stores in Denmark from the German discounter. The deal will give REMA 1000 Denmark access to locations that are well-suited for the discount retail chain, the company said in a statement. "The agreement is a milestone for us and illustrates the power of our business model," said Ole Robert Reitan, CEO of Reitan Retail, of which REMA 1000 is a part.

Aquila reports a 29% increase in net profit on improved distribution business
Aquila, a leader in integrated distribution and logistics services for the consumer goods market (including frozen vegetables and canned food - Bonduelle) in Romania and Moldova, ended H1 2023 on growing business and net profit, in line with its unveiled strategy. The company reported an increase of approximately 17% y-o-y to RON1,122mln, driven mainly by a growth in revenues from the distribution business segment, which accounts for over 90% of the company's turnover. The company's net profit grew by 29% to RON42mln.

UK: First gen farmers start organic veg business for local supply
First-generation veg farmers Jono Hughes and Holly Tomlinson took the plunge to set up an organic veg business with the aim of supplying locally produced vegetables in South Wales and encouraging young people into the industry. Keen to base the business known as "Blas Gwent" on the doorstep of a large market potential, the husband and wife team purchased a 4ha field a few miles east of Cardiff in February last year. Their first harvest saw them produce an array of crops, including courgettes, peas, squash, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, and beetroot.

Supply chain issues remain
In the latest consumer research conducted for IGD (23-24 August 2023), six in ten adults (58%) experienced shortages of some food and groceries in-store or online recently. This has remained stable since last month. Although this is significantly lower than when restrictions on fruit and vegetables were introduced in February, this is still far higher than when first measured in July 2021 (50%). Availability concerns have remained relatively flat for fresh produce (25% compared to 24% last month). More respondents in Northern Ireland are concerned with the availability of fresh produce (44% vs. 25% overall).

Aldi has announced it has lowered the prices on a range of fruit and veg products. It says, this week, shoppers can enjoy lower prices on items including strawberries, tomatoes, potatoes and spinach. Fruit and veg items in Aldi’s Everyday Essentials range are included in the latest price drop, which has seen items fall by an average of around 9%.

US: Walmart now accounts for one-third of all online grocery sales
Walmart reached a new milestone in e-commerce grocery sales during the second quarter, capturing more than a third (36%) of the US market, according to a report by data analytics firm Brick Meets Click. The study "Measuring the Online Grocery Market: eGrocery Share in the US," sponsored by e-commerce provider Mercatus, noted that Walmart's new market high was up 5 percentage points from the same period last year.
