Pepper and tomato prices collapse in summer heat

The hot summer weather has not done tomato prices any good. Average prices at the VBT dropped below the five-year average last week for the first time since January. At a meager 29 euro cents per kilo, vine tomatoes are still paid slightly better than loose tomatoes (27 euro cents).

Pepper prices also collapsed, halved, in fact. An average of 97.3 euro cents per kilo remains for all colors combined. Orange is traditionally best valued at 1.93 euros. Red follows with 1.15. Green and yellow do not differ much in price: both 71 euro cents each, with yellow being just a little bit more expensive, far beyond the decimal point.

Those who thought that the summer weather would do the cucumber price good will be disappointed. At the auctions affiliated with the Federation of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives, the average price came to 14.8 euro cents a piece. Down from the 19.3 euro cents paid just a week earlier. So this upturn was short-lived. The price of organic cucumbers did rise slightly, to almost 72 euro cents a piece.

The strawberry price also continues to drop. The average price came in at over 2.48 euros per kilo in week 25. Sonsation is the best paid at 2.93.

The aubergine price did maintain itself. The popular barbecue vegetable rose in price by ten euro cents to 51.8 euro cents per kilo.

All figures can be checked here: www.vlaanderen.be/landbouwcijfers. The VBT average prices for vegetables for week 25 can be viewed here, and those for fruit here.
