In 2012, a group of vegetable horticulturists in IJsselmuiden jointly started heating their greenhouses with geothermal heat, pumping warm water of 73-74 °C up from a depth of 1,950 meters. Now, five vegetable growers heat 23.5 hectares of greenhouses this way.
With the use of geothermal energy, natural gas consumption at horticultural companies has decreased by 70% to 90%. Since the start of the project in 2012, the horticultural companies realized a reduction of their use of natural gas by 53 million cubic meters since the start of the project, and new horticultural companies are still reporting that they would like to switch to this form of sustainable heat.
At the Hartogsweg in IJsselmuiden, the summer of 2022 was full of drilling activities to realize an extra geothermal production well located next to the well, which was drilled in 2012. Inco-Drilling was responsible for the placement by means of directional drilling of this second geothermal production well from 144 meters to 1,990 meters. The actual drilling time of this project was only 26 days.

"The cooperation with all of the subcontractors, including Inco-Drilling, was excellent during the construction phase of the project," says Radboud. "Before the second production well was drilled, 5 million m3 of natural gas was saved every year, with the new well, 9 million m3 is expected to be saved per year. The well was taken into production according to planning at the end of 2022, and given the expected results so far, we can now save an additional 4 million m3 gas per year."
"We definitely plan to involve Inco-Drilling again in the drilling and well design trajectory for the next geothermal wells, to be realized in 2 to 3 years' time," Radboud concludes.
