Greenhouse cucumber harvest started in Tokat, Turkey

Greenhouse producers in Tokat started to harvest cucumbers. Cucumbers are sold for 0.4 USD per kg at wholesale and 0.75 USD per kg at retail. Greenhouse producers, which harvest cucumbers quarterly, will continue to harvest cucumbers until July. The fact that the harvest of cucumbers from greenhouses around Antalya is about to finish turns the attention of the market to Tokat and Amasya and increases the demand for the products of greenhouse producers from these two cities. Depending on the size of the cucumber, the price of cucumbers ranges from 0.4 USD to 0.55 USD per kg at wholesale. One grower from the region noted that the cucumbers in the greenhouse were planted on February 28, and they expect to harvest around 25 tons of products from 2,000 square meters. The growers also noted that they will spread the harvest period and elongate it through the winter months when cucumber prices increase.

Grower Medet Dogan added: "The production is high in the summer, but the prices are low. I will have finished the harvest here by the month of July. Prices vary, and the harvest is coming to an end in the Antalya region, which is a huge advantage for growers from Tokat and Amasya. There is a production gap in the market for cucumbers between mid-May and mid-July, and when greenhouse cultivation develops in Amasya and Tokat, the growers from these cities can fill this gap and take advantage of the high prices. With cucumber production taking place in the open field in July, there may be serious decreases in prices, which can negatively affect greenhouse cucumber prices. I currently sell my products here in the Niksar market. I recommend greenhouse cultivation to everyone. Marketing as a single grower has a small impact, but if the number of people who do it increases, collective marketing will become active. I wish we had a large number of greenhouses in Tokat and Amasya, so we can take an advantageous position."
