Bosnia and Herzegovina yields to Ukraine and Morocco on the global raspberry market

According to EastFruit analysts, Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of Ukraine’s competitors in the global frozen raspberry market, has reduced its exports in value terms by 48% and, in quantitative terms, by 45% over the past 12 calendar months. Thus, this country lost its high position in the world ranking and reduced the level of influence on the global raspberry market.

Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 6.9 thousand tons of frozen raspberries from April 2022 to March 2023, compared to 12.6 thousand tons a year earlier. Thus, the downward trend in the exports of this berry, which began in 2019 and has been observed for four years now, not only persisted but also sharply accelerated.

The strengthening of downward trends in exports from Bosnia and Herzegovina was obviously caused by the general crisis of the European market for frozen raspberries this season, which we described in detail earlier.

Noteworthy, the main market for Bosnia’s raspberries was Serbia, which added value to and re-exported frozen berries from Bosnia and Herzegovina. About half of all raspberries from Bosnia and Herzegovina were exported to Serbia. Other major buyers were: Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Poland, and Austria. Exports to all of these countries but Belgium dropped sharply.

At the same time, Ukraine, despite Russian aggression on its territory and terrorist attacks against the country’s civil energy infrastructure, continued to increase exports of frozen raspberries. In particular, in the 2022/23 season, it is expected that the exports of frozen raspberries from Ukraine will grow by at least 20-25%. Over the past 12 months, Ukraine exported 42.5 thousand tons of frozen raspberries, increasing exports by 9 thousand tons compared to the previous 12-month period. Thus, exports from Ukraine increased by a larger volume than the entire exports of frozen raspberries from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the same period of time.

It is interesting to note that just a few years ago, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported more frozen raspberries per season than Ukraine. However, now the export volumes of Ukraine’s frozen raspberries are approximately 6 times higher than the export volumes of these berries from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Thus, Ukraine is gradually ousting Bosnia and Herzegovina from the global raspberry market. Also, an important factor on Bosnia and Herzegovina is the strengthening of Morocco’s position in the global frozen raspberry market. Actually, recently we posted an article showing that Morocco has recently moved up in the global raspberry exports ranking, leaving the USA behind.

More information about the typical raspberry price cycles and the prospects for raspberry prices in the new season can be found in this article.
