OP ABioMed: "Thanks to our sturdiness, we manage to strengthen our presence on the international markets"

Investing is impossible due to the cost of money

OP ABioMed from Ragusa (Sicily) boasts an increasingly-solid position as its number of producer partners has grown to 434 in the last year, covering approximately 2400 hectares all over Sicily. The turnover has reached €150 million, 130 of which are from commercialized produce.

"Our accounts are robust and in order, perfectly in line with the company's development and expansion principles. All this despite the difficult moments experienced last year due to the table grape crisis, which forced us to manage dropping prices and the withdrawal of the produce from the market. The carrot season did not do better," explained Luciano Caruso, director of ABioMed.

"Things have gone much better during this 2022/23 season. Vegetables have done well so far, so we managed to make up for the higher expenses we have had to endure due to the increase in production costs. Nonetheless, it was not possible to invest to improve or enlarge the existing facilities. Let's say that the situation only enables us to strengthen our presence in the European markets we have been operating for years without expanding as we had hoped. We are being affected by the reduced purchasing power of European consumers, the weakest link of a system that is being affected by inflation with an increasingly fluctuating socio-economic situation."

"It's almost impossible to make investments at the moment, not least because of the cost of money, which discourages even the best of intentions. We are currently assessing how to attract new partners for the scientific research we are planning to make our production even more sustainable, meaning it will have to obtain an increased value during the commercialization phase in the interest of our producers."

"Despite the crisis, we cannot neglect promotion, and we will take part in the leading sector fairs. The next one is Macfrut in Rimini: we will welcome guests in hall B5, stand no. 33."
