VBT figures week 15

Greenhouse vegetable prices drop, except for red pepper

In the week after Easter, cucumber prices fell below the five-year average at VBT. The asparagus price went down by half, and prices of other greenhouse vegetables also decreased slightly. In contrast, the price of red peppers rose again in week 15.

The average price for red peppers came to 3.03 euros per kilo, over 40 euro cents more than the week before. At just over three euros per kilo, the price is well above the five-year average. Volumes are still limited.

Over the past five years, only week 15 in 2020 could rival this price. Only the average price for orange peppers lags behind at 1.75 euros. The average prices for yellow and green slipped slightly last week.

So did the prices for aubergines (0.96 euros per kilo in week 15), green courgette (34 euro cents each), and cucumber. The average unit price here came to 19.4 euro cents. As in week 12, this puts the price below the five-year average.

Cucumber prices were even recorded at 10 euro cents, Boerenbond knows, sharing a market analysis. What is not helping the pricing of various summer vegetables is the lack of sunny spring weather, it also writes.

Tomato prices are still well above the five-year average, though. The price for loose tomatoes fell sharply in week 15 to just over 2 euros. The average price for vine tomatoes is higher at a rounded 2.29 euros per kilo.

For lettuce, it differed per variety whether prices rose or fell in week 15. The average price for head lettuce fell below the five-year average, averaging just under 34 euro cents per head.

The average price for asparagus dropped below the five-year average last week. The strawberry price also dropped but remained above the five-year average, the average price being 5.92 euros per kilo at the end of week 15. Sonsation prices are above the strawberry price at just under 6.15 euros, and Elsanta prices are slightly below at 5.77 euros.

The above graphs come from the agricultural figures page of the Flemish Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. All figures can be checked here: www.vlaanderen.be/landbouwcijfers. The VBT average prices for vegetables for week 15 can be checked here. Those for fruit here.
