Last season, the price of conventional vine tomatoes surpassed that of organic tomatoes

According to the information provided by the Junta de Andalucía Observatory of Prices and Markets, consulted by Hortoinfo, during the 2021/2022 campaign, conventional vine tomatoes were sold at a higher price than organic tomatoes. Conventional vine tomatoes were sold at an average price of €1.09/kg, i.e. 4.8% more expensive than the €1.04/kg average price achieved by the organic tomatoes.

The average prices of conventional and organic pear tomatoes were almost equal, as they stood at €0.75/kg (50% more than in the previous campaign) and €0.77/kg, respectively.

The cherry variety is the most relevant organic tomato, as it continues to be more expensive than the conventional tomato, even though the price gap between them has decreased in recent years. In the 2021/2022 campaign, the average price of organic cherry tomatoes stood at €1.60/kg, i.e. 14.3% more expensive than the conventional one, which had an average price of €1.4/kg. The difference in these prices contrasts with the 33.06% differential obtained in the 2017/2018 campaign when the average price of the organic cherry tomato stood at €1.61/kg and the conventional product had a price of €1.21/kg. Since then, that gap has narrowed campaign after campaign.

The cherry variety is the best-selling organic tomato
According to the Observatory, cherry tomatoes accounted for 42% of the total volume of organic tomatoes sold in the 2021/2022 campaign; branch tomatoes for 36%, pear tomatoes for 14%, round tomatoes for 4%, ribbed tomatoes for 1%, and the remaining was distributed among other varieties.

In terms of value, cherry tomatoes accounted for 56% of the income from organic tomato cultivation, branch tomatoes for 31%, pear tomatoes for 9%, round tomatoes for 1%, ribbed tomatoes for 1%, and the other varieties for 2%.
