Fruit scanner set to reduce waste

Scanner uses algorithms and NIR sensor to identify freshness of avocados and strawberries

According to tech company OneThird, up to 40% of perishable foods end up being discarded before they are consumed. The company has created a scanner that allows the user to identify whether the fruit is in good condition and avoids situations where the outside of the product is beautiful, but the inside is completely spoiled.

With the scanner, OneThird hopes to reduce the waste of perishable food by about 25%, in addition to making the user's life easier when it comes to consuming food. "The astronomical amount of food that is wasted annually is staggering, especially as so much wastage takes place in wealthy countries. We have worked hard to create technology that can help with this global challenge that directly impacts food shortages," commented Marco Snikkers, CEO and founder of OneThird.

According to Snikkers, the company's scanner is capable of identifying the shelf life of canned products rather than just identifying the amount of sugar or acidity, as is the case with current laboratory scanners. "We are very proud to have built the first product capable of accurately and objectively estimating the shelf life of fresh products."
