Lab Associates present at IPM Essen

“Automating lab processes ensures higher efficiency and quality”

Lab Associates is a global supplier for plant science laboratories and plant-based industries. The company prides themselves on their service, and with over 35 years of experience and a network of specialized partners and experts in the field, they have an extended knowledge base that they use to find the best possible solutions for you.

The company will be present at the IPM Essen, and to already get acquainted with their products Lab Associates’ Rea Qafa talks about four of their products.

Media preparators
Many tissue culture labs still use autoclaves to sterilize their media. A process that usually involves pre-mixing the media, placing the containers in the autoclave, waiting for it to heat up, sterilizing, and cooling down the media. However, this way of operating can be quite labor-intensive and not time efficient.

“Our media preparators help automate the media preparation process, as the media preparator will heat, sterilize and cool down actively on its own, reducing the cycle time per batch. Due to the fast cycle and high level of efficiency, cost benefits can be realized in human labor, media ingredients, energy, and water consumption. For reference, our LAB22 50L media preparator can heat, sterilize for 15 min and cool down in ca. 55 min!”

(Semi-) Automatic multiple media dispensers
Dispensing is also a very time-consuming process due to the wide variety of culture vessels used for different stages like multiplication and rooting, as well as culture tubes being used. The variety in shapes and formats of vessels and tubes make it difficult to make the media production process more efficient. Other key reasons for the large amount of time needed are slow autoclaves or mediaclaves and using manual or slow-working dispensing equipment.

“The media dispensing process can be more efficient with our (semi-) automated dispensing systems for culture tubes and conicals. The system communicates with our media preparator and will also be able to automatically sterilize the dispensing tube with steam before starting the dispensing process. Once the media preparation program has been finished, you will be able to dispense media into 48 (6 x 8) tubes in a single run and with one simple push of a button.”

Consumables (unfiltered and filtered vessels)
“Our pre-sterilized VDS disposable round vessels are ideal for any laboratory, as they help eliminate the operational costs for cleaning and sterilizing cultivation vessels. They are made from fully recyclable polypropylene and polystyrene plastic and contain no toxic waste, and don’t produce toxic emissions. They are available in different heights, 50, 70, 80, or 140 mm high, with smooth lids or ribbed lids for extra ventilation.”

“If you would like to have controlled gas exchange, then our filtered vessels are a great solution. The inVenti⁺ cultivation vessels with filter are designed for optimal air exchange while still maintaining sterility in every plant tissue culture operation. The filters of inVenti⁺ vessels are placed via in-mold labeling, guaranteeing the same gas exchange for each vessel. The vessels are made from fully recyclable polypropylene plastic.”

Lightweight forceps
As many labs still use surgical forceps during the cutting and transplanting of plants, a lot of lab operators start getting muscle plain on their wrists after using these heavy, hard-to-pinch forceps for long shifts.

“For this reason, we developed our own forceps, which are made specifically for plant tissue culture. They are lighter and easier to pinch, ideal for handling delicate plant material and making them easier to handle for the lab operators.”
