European Commission data shows that the total tomato production in the Eu will fall by 3% in 2022 compared to 2021 to 6.2 MMT. This is mainly due to a lack of irrigation water, a switch to other more competitive crops with less risk and higher input costs.
EU countries are reportedly also relying on more imported tomatoes, with imports rising by 14% in 2021 compared to 2020 with further rises expected this year (2022) mainly from Morocco followed by Turkey.
