This week, one of the biggest events for the international horticulture industry, the Canadian Greenhouse Conference, will take place. This event will connect industry partners and growers from all over the world.
Sollum Technologies will provide a seminar on Thursday, the 6th of October, at 2 PM, focusing on dynamic lighting for greenhouse strawberries.
“Greenhouse strawberry production is on the rise in Canada, alongside lettuce and other novel crops. We’re seeing a big interest in learning how to grow strawberries under light. We need to produce greenhouse strawberries in a way that they can compete with open-field berries coming out of California,” says Rose Seguin of Sollum Technologies.
So far, greenhouse innovation has strongly focused on temperature management, fertilizer regimes, irrigation, and pest management, among other elements. However, Rose explains that lighting has remained somewhat static until recently. During her presentation, she will be focusing on the different ways that dynamic lighting can improve greenhouse strawberry production, from the production of tray plants to berries.
“Dynamic lighting allows growers to tune the photoperiod, intensity, and spectrum into their specific varieties, time of the year, ambient conditions, and production targets. We’re hoping that it allows growers to remain flexible and makes this market segment more resilient.”
