South Africa: Pepper prices soared over 40% in one week

Prices for peppers in South Africa have soared to near record levels, going up by more than 40% in one week. According to Johnny van der Merwe, managing director of agricultural information group Agimark Trends (AMT), last week, the price of peppers reached R20.05 after volumes dropped by 22%. Red peppers, in particular, were most affected, with prices breaching R40 for one kilogram.

Last month, prices for the vegetable saw a massive spike and were as much as 105% more expensive than last year at the same time. The cost of peppers reached R20.30.
