An Open Day dedicated to the new TSI Italia tomato variety "Pizzillo" was held at Gold Green in Santa Croce Camerina (Sicily).
"Pizzillo is the modern version of an ancient tomato. The one our grandmas used and a variety we sought in order to fill a gap that had formed within the Sicilian table tomato segment. It is called Pizzillo because it is reminiscent of the pizzutello tomatoes that used to be grown in the Sicilian open fields," explained Rosario Privitera, Area Manager Centro Sud at TSI Italia.
Pizzillo is a midi plum variety with compact fruits. Plants boast a medium vigor with good leaf coverage at regular internodes. Excellent setting throughout the entire cycle. Bunches of 8-10 fruits in a herringbone pattern, uniform grade, and average weight of 35-50 grams. Fleshy and compact.

"Reintroducing a segment entails a certain responsibility, as the flavor must maintain what the shape of the tomato suggests. Pizzillo does not just boast a great flavor but also the right color, good grades, and strong green parts. Of course, as Pizzillo is a modern variety, it boasts genetic advantages as well, such as the resistance to Cladosporium, meaning no specific treatments are necessary."
The producers, nursery gardeners, and traders who attended the event seemed impressed by Pizzillo. Older producers talked with the TSI Italia team about what they remember from Pizzutelli from the past, while younger ones discovered a segment that is rather unusual for Sicily, especially when it comes to the intensive production of greenhouse tomatoes.
