Rising per capita consumption in Germany

Tomatoes and cucumbers: The unbeatable duo from domestic growers

Tomatoes and cucumbers grown in Germany are now hitting the market in increasing numbers. The domestic fruit vegetable continues to enjoy increasing popularity among consumers. Whether cherry tomato, vine tomato, cherry date tomato, bottle tomato or beef tomato - with an average per capita consumption of 8.1 kg, the bright red nightshade variety is the favorite vegetable among Germans. It is closely followed by the cucumber, which belongs to the cucurbits. German consumers ate 6.2 kg of it last year.

Cucumbers and tomatoes are harvested in Germany from March to October - in 2021 alone, more than 98,000 tons of tomatoes and 67,000 tons of cucumbers were harvested. A not inconsiderable proportion of the approximately 82 kg of fresh vegetables purchased by German citizens per household last year is attributable to the red and green vegetable classics alone.
