Morocco to curb fuel and vegetables price increase

The soaring prices of fuels and products such as tomatoes have caused social discontent in Morocco, where protests were held in several cities on February 20. The Government adopted a number of subsidies and measures to address the situation and maintain price stability.

According to Minister Mustafa Baitas, the government met with professionals in the transport sector and decided to award direct aid to these professionals. To this end, the Government has created a platform where bus, coach, and truck carriers could enter their data.

The minister said that the price of tomato, which reached up to 14 dirhams or 1.2 euro per kilo, would go down in the coming days in the markets. He also ensured that there was a high production of tomatoes and that it would cover domestic demand.

The minister said that the price of tomato had gone up due to the increases in the international market (where its price reached 1.5 euro), the increase in exports of this product -which is very consumed by Moroccans, especially in the next month of Ramadan-, and the speculation by intermediaries in the sector. However, he added, the Government implemented several measures since last week to stabilize the situation.

Authorities also control the number of export trucks leaving the country, Baitas added in a press conference.
