Andalusian vine tomato prices are 300% higher than last season

According to a report by the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de Andalusia, which analyzes the state of Andalusian vegetables in the last week, tomato, pepper, and cucumber achieved the best-valued vegetables at the end of the autumn campaign.

Pepper
The supply of pepper in Almería was similar to last week. "Both daytime and nighttime temperatures have been rising throughout the week, which has favored the harvest. Marketers are receiving more volumes of red varieties and fewer Italian pepper, green Lamuyo, and California peppers than last week."

Yellow and green California peppers have increased their price by 5% compared to last week, while red California prices remained stable. The green Lamuyo is the only type of pepper that lost value this week (-6%). Red and Italian Lamuyo prices increased by 20%.

Tomato
Tomato prices were similar to last season's prices until December. "Since then, the bulk of the European productions came to an end, night temperatures decreased, and there was a smaller winter tomato area in Europe. As a result, prices began to increase, with occasional inflections, a trend that currently continues in most commercial types," the Observatory stated.

According to the Junta, industry experts expect tomato prices will be good in March and April due to the limited production in Europe, the delay in the start of the spring campaign, and the decrease in tomato exports from Turkey due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Specifically, the average tomato price has increased by 4% compared to last week. Vine tomatoes continue to achieve record prices, as their price was 7% higher than last week and more than 300% higher than in the same week of last season.

Cucumber
The supply of cucumber decreased over the last week, a trend that will continue until the end of the campaign. The early cucumber plantations have been withdrawn to carry out a second crop cycle and the late ones are entering their final phase of production.

Almeria's cucumber average price was 14% lower than in the previous week, however, it is almost 40% higher than last season's figures. French cucumber prices fell by 9% and the price of short cucumbers has stabilized when compared to last week.
