Matthias Oertel, managing director of Rolf Oertel Ltd at the Leipzig wholesale market, offers a wide range of goods from Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Poland, among others, including products such as peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, but also kohlrabi and finer salads. The company can look back on 110 years of eventful history and, since 2018, now also features its own production line for convenience goods on its 1,587sqm premises.

Currently, the Oertel company sources TOVs from Turkey and loose tomatoes from Spain. "The qualities have been stable to date. There were only minor problems with coloring about four weeks ago," Oertel said. "I would say there has been a 10% price increase in tomatoes."
The farm's main sales come from its large pickup market directly at the wholesale market. Through its own trucks, smaller food retailers and the catering industry in the Leipzig area are also supplied. "At the pick-up market, our clientele consists of smaller specialty food stores, which were able to generate very good returns in 2020 because the larger shopping centers tended to be avoided."
In 2021, however, the situation has put itself into perspective again, according to Oertel. "This is also related to the fact that the cost structure of a small specialty vegetable store is not comparable to the those of a discounter or a large chain. The customer movement in the previous year, therefore, tended more towards discounters or food retailers," says the Leipzig-based wholesaler.
Leap forward
Even if there were currently fewer opportunities than before Corona, the situation was better than in 2021 in the same months, however. "We already notice a leap forward; sales are somewhat better than in 2021, at least in the foodservice sector," Oertel concludes.
