US imports of Mexican squash and cucumber do not affect local production

Mexico will be able to continue selling its squash and cucumber to the US. The investigations carried out by US authorities at the request of producers in Florida and Georgia have concluded that imports do not affect local production.

In 2020, the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) began an investigation to determine whether these imports represented a threat to US production and concluded that they didn't. In fact, the ITC found that cucumber and squash imports into the US from Mexico, which increased considerably between 2015 and 2020, helped meet the demand of American consumers consumption trends are shifting towards healthier foods, stated Alfredo Diaz, the general director of the Mexican Association of Protected Horticulture (AMHPAC).

The investigation highlighted the quality, variety, and packaging of the Mexican products, he stated.

He also said that the increased demand represented a business opportunity for the horticultural industry, as it promoted the growth of the infrastructure for production. As a result, the area devoted to protected agriculture increases by 1,500 hectares per year.

Now producers await for US authorities to finish the investigation into pepper exports, which they expect will have the same favorable outcome as the other investigations on the rest of the crops that have been questioned.
