In January 2022, tomato prices in the European Union increased almost everywhere compared to December 2021. In a market update from the European Commission, it is notable that only the price for cherry tomatoes in Portugal, vine tomatoes in Italy and round tomatoes from Spain did not increase.
If we look at the Netherlands and Belgium, it is striking that the prices here rose faster than average in the European Union. The production from greenhouses with lights is considerably lower here at the moment. This is reflected in the prices.
The situation is different in Spain. Here, only the price for cherry tomatoes has increased seriously, while the increase for vine tomatoes (+2 percent) and the decrease for round tomatoes (-10 percent) stand out.
Across the board, prices for cherry tomatoes in the European Union rose by 22 percent, for vine tomatoes by 4 percent and for round tomatoes by 21 percent.
