Tomatoes remain at the top of the ranking of the main organic fruits and vegetables in Andalusian protected cultivation. According to data published by the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Government of Andalusia, in the 2020/21 season, they accounted for 29% of the volume and 38% of the total value of the 7 most important organic greenhouse crops in the autonomous region. However, the Andalusian agency mentions that it lost representativeness compared to the previous season, "recording a decline of about 8% in the volume compared to other vegetables. In terms of value, the percentage decreased by just under 7%."
The organic cherry tomato was the commercial type with greater representation in terms of volume last season, accounting for 49% of all organic tomatoes marketed.
Watermelons were the second most grown organic product in the greenhouses of Andalusia in the 2020/21 season, with 21% of the total, although they ranked fifth in terms of value, with 9% of the total. The Observatory says that, compared to the previous season, there was an increase of 53% in the amount marketed.
The mini watermelon is the most representative commercial type in organic production, specifically the striped mini, which accounts for 73% of the total amount of organic watermelons marketed.
With 18% of the volume and 19% of the total value, organic cucumbers ranked third in terms of volume and second in terms of value in the ranking of the 7 most important organic greenhouse crops. In the 2020/21 season there was also a 5.6% increase in the amount marketed compared to the previous season.
As for commercial cucumber types, almost all of the organic production corresponds to the Almeria type, as stated by the agency in a report.
Organic zucchini accounted for 14% of the volume and 11% of the value, ranking fourth in terms of both volume and value, with green zucchini as the main commercial type.
In fifth place in terms of volume and third in terms of value we have bell peppers, which account for 12% of the volume and 19% of the value.
Bell peppers are the most representative commercial type, accounting for 75% of the total amount of organic peppers. The red ones account for 64% of them, while yellow peppers account for 26% and green ones for 10%. The conical sweet bell pepper represents 25% in terms of volume.
It is worth noting that the amount of bell peppers marketed throughout the 2020/21 season increased by 23% due to "the expansion of the organic acreage and the decision of some producers to switch from tomato to pepper cultivation.
The sixth place in the ranking in terms of both volume and value was for organic eggplant, with 4% of the total quantity and value. The long black eggplant was the main commercial type.
The seventh and last place was for organic green beans, with 0.5% of the volume and 1% of the total value.
