Plans by Thyssenvermögensverwaltung and Agriculture Park AG to grow tomatoes on 20 hectares in Hünxe in the Lower Rhine region from 2023 onwards will apparently not be pursued further. According to local media, there would be no prospect of the greenhouse project being approved in the near future. This means that the pilot project is near its termination now.
The ambitious construction plans met with criticism from local politicians and citizens as soon as they were published. "This project will take away an enormous area of green lands at the expense of a beautiful landscape in the neighborhood of the Testerberge, which is used by many people for local recreation. Last but not least, it means increased traffic and light pollution at night. A large greenhouse facility on an industrial scale is to be built here. The project belongs at the commercial and industrial park of Bucholtwelmen and not in the middle of this beautiful landscape," an announcement from October last year read.
