850.000 Euros in damages

EU puts a stop to tomato fraud gang

A European gang is alleged to have embezzled hundreds of thousands of euros in EU funds through dubious dealings in fake tomato plantations. Now, nine people and organizations in Romania must go to court. Anti-fraud agency Olaf speaks of a tomato fraud gang accused of embezzling some 850,000 euros in EU agricultural subsidies meant for tomato plantations in Romania.

Authorities uncovered a series of forged documents and shell companies that appear to have been used to illegally obtain the money. The alleged fraudsters transferred the money to bank accounts in Italy, in turn using it for other criminal activities.
