Belgium: Tomato price rises on auction clocks in week 47

The tomato price was on the rise last week on the clocks of the Belgian auctions that are members of the Verbond van Tuinbouwveilingen. Loose tomatoes sold for an average of over 92 euro cents in week 47 and vine tomatoes for almost 1.22 euros per kilo.

In a market update, LAVA mentioned falling numbers as the reason for the rising prices. A fortnight ago, there was still a slight increase in vine tomatoes, but the middle price for loose tomatoes remained stable. In loose tomatoes, LAVA points out that the coarser varieties were paid better than the smaller ones.

The cucumber price remained stable at over 57 euro cents per unit, while the various types of greenhouse lettuce gained slightly in price. For lettuce, LAVA speaks of "normal" prices for the time of year and "expensive" prices for alternative lettuce varieties.

Greenhouse strawberries fetched an average of 7.05 euro per kilo in week 47. Elsanta was sold for an average of 7.53 euro per kilo.
