Smart Packaging Solutions has introduced a new fruit and vegetable punnet. The solid cardboard packaging is strong, circular, and easy to handle. It is a sustainable, environmentally friendly packaging option. "The market and consumers are increasingly demanding sustainable packaging," says Martijn Fluyt, Product Development Manager at this Belgian company.
"Governments are also encouraging this. In France, for example, selling fresh fruit and vegetables in plastic will be banned as of January 1, 2022. That's why we developed this fruit and vegetable punnet. It's made of solid cardboard, a sustainable alternative to plastic."
100% circular
This packaging is constructed from 100% recycled paper and cardboard. You can use it for all kinds of products. "You can use it for products weighing between 500g and 2kg. Using solid cardboard guarantees sturdy, solid packaging. That makes it an ideal solution for packaging not only pears. But Brussels sprouts and other fruit and vegetables too. People can throw it in the paper recycling bin after use. It's a true circular solution," continues Martijn.
Sturdy, easy to use packaging
This fruit and vegetable packaging is user-friendly. So, it ensures an efficient packaging process. The design allows for easy folding, mechanically, into the desired shape. "We deliver the packaging flat to minimize transportation costs. The folded packages can be easily stacked. And, as importantly, easily taken apart again. The fruit and vegetables can, therefore, be packed quickly and efficiently."
Optimal protection
The fresh produce is optimally protected throughout the supply chain. That is thanks to the packaging's construction and use of solid cardboard. So, it arrives at the client undamaged and in top condition. For a unique look, you can fully personalize the packaging. That is in terms of size, design, and specific brand colors, and logo printing.
Visibility
The packaging was designed from the end user's perspective. "Shoppers like to see what's inside the packaging. Therefore, it can have multiple openings," Van Overmiere explains. "That could be in the shape of the product. It's resealable too. So, consumers can also keep the product in the packaging at home."
Sustainability was the packaging design's starting point. That and conscious handling of packaging is in Smart Packaging Solutions' DNA. "It's crucial that our packaging's raw materials retain their value. They must keep circulating in the packaging economy. Recycled fibers are our solid cardboard's main raw material. That can then be 100% recycled into renewable raw material," Martijn concludes.
