Leningrad region increases strawberry production

Growers in the Leningrad region have grown over 10 tons of berries since the beginning of the season, of which 4 tons have been cropped in the high-tech greenhouse complex Utkonos.

The innovative greenhouse specialising in growing berries has been visited by the governor of Leningrad region, Mr. Aleksander Drozdenko in course of his working visit to Priozersk region.

“If anyone told me a few years ago that we would be successfully growing strawberries, I would not have believed them”, shared the governor. “According to the results of last year, we collected 155 tons of berries, 110 of which are strawberries. Today we are witnessing application of contemporary technologies, allowing guaranteed crop collection irrespective of the climatic variances. The regional government is eager to support such projects and increase the production of fresh high quality fruit and vegetables.” 

The head of the region visited the complex with the acreage of 3.2 ha, growing raspberries and strawberries and a construction plot, where another 9.2 ha of tunnel greenhouses are being developed. The greenhouse management have told about the current construction status and plans on acquiring another 8 ha of greenhouses. In all Utkonos complex will be occupying 20.4 ha and producing 400 tons of berries a year.

LLC Utkonos is the only greenhouse grower in Russia, engaged in growing seasonal berries in accordance with the latest technologies, allowing them achieve competitive quality of produce. The first crops were collected in 2018. In 2020, the enterprise yielded 38.8 tons of raspberries and 14.5 tons of strawberries.
