Fourth video of ‘Valstar: the Sustainable Series’

Packaging vegetables sustainably, why do you do that?

It is perhaps one of the most talked-about topics of the past few years: the discussion surrounding sustainable packaging. Packaging needs to be functional and sustainable. But how? Our packaging manager, Martin van Rest, discussed this topic with Ruud Hoosemans, Program Manager Sustainability at the Fresh Produce Centre. The discussion can be seen in the latest video of the Valstar: Sustainable Series.

Packaging is an effective way to counter food wastage as well as provide the food safety of products. You can also convey information about the product through packaging, making it possible to distinguish your brand on the market. Every form of packaging material has its pros and cons. But what is the most sustainable choice? The answer you can find in the latest video of the Sustainable Series.

Sustainable packaging at Valstar
"During transportation through the product chain, from greenhouse to consumer, we want our product to remain of good quality, which is why we choose a packaging that enriches the product because throwing it out would be a waste! The material used is also important, which is why we preferably work with environmentally friendly, recycled materials and leave out the unnecessary packaging.”

"To make big strides, we have established a Sustainable Packaging team within Best Fresh. This team advises us about sustainable materials, recycling processes, and improvement points for our primary and secondary packaging. The focus is on circularity and leaving as small of an environmental impact as possible.”

The Sustainable Series on Spotify
We still need to wait for a bit, but soon you can listen to the entire conversation between Martin and Ruud on Spotify. You can already listen to the first episode with Emma & Toine about food wastage and the conversation between Norman and René about sustainable cultivation.
