Italian breeding company Fenix

"We're breeding for the Mediterranean countries"

The Italian breeding company Fenix is settled just below the Etna volcano, in the eastern part of Sicily. They have been active for 9 years by now and select, test and develop vegetable varieties for the Mediterranean countries. "We improve the growing techniques of commercial varieties by relying on a team of agronomists that supplies the all-technical support that is necessary to achieve the best results," says Fenix Manager and Co-founder Ivana Marchese. "Horticulture is a central point for sustainability and that is why we work hard to supply a wide range of species and varieties characterized by the highest genetic value".

Selecting the veggies
Fenix's job begins with a first vegetables-experimental phase and then proceeds with the hybrid's selection. "We conduct an important part of our research within our farm where we create the best growing conditions (under greenhouses, tunnels and open field) while keeping the other parameters under control," Ivana explains.

Fenix's team studies horticultural techniques for both pre-commercial and commercial varieties and, at the same time, it is always searching for high-performing varieties able to achieve a high surplus value, which represent the actual replies to the agrobusiness chain needs.

Mediterranean area
The company's agronomists realize several screenings for different varieties and they test their suitability to the soil and climate conditions of the Mediterranean area.

New website
In its new website the company explains its main activities and results. There are several pages for each item belonging to the herbs, vegetables and rootstock sections. A blog-dedicated section and news with articles on the company, products and farming are also online. Lastly, there is the possibility to load your own curriculum vitae (CV) and contacting Fenix to open the road to an eventual cooperation.  "During these years, we grew up by gaining new experiences and we thought that it was the right time to refresh our presence on the web too," Ivana concludes.
