Volker Janssen, Frucht Janssen: Start of the season just in time for Easter

"People are craving strawberries"

Traditionally, the first German spring produce will hit the market at Easter. It is a seasonal highlight for asparagus, strawberries and many other goodies. The early date of these holidays makes this somewhat difficult in 2021. We spoke to Volker Janssen of Frucht Janssen, who is already deeply involved in preparations for the start of the strawberry season.

"Currently, we are busy repairing parts of our greenhouses that were damaged or even partially collapsed during the snowstorm a few weeks ago. We have to get through that now until the strawberries can really get going," says Janssen.

He is positive about the first half of the year, despite this damage: "I am convinced that we will get off to a very good start in April and May. People are craving strawberries - many are still at home and looking forward to the change in their everyday life that these sweet messengers of spring will bring."

The strawberry expert from Viersen wants to harvest his earliest fruits in the week before Easter: "These volumes of course will not yet be enough for retail promotions, but we can definitely already supply some consumers with German strawberries for the Easter holidays."

Things should really get going around April 10 - five days earlier than usual. "Normally we start with the standard goods on April 15, but thanks to the nice weather of the last few weeks - not mentioning the snowstorm - we can start a little earlier. That's good, because veryEndless summer in cucumber greenhouse with natural sunlight LED little merchandise is coming into Germany from Spain at the moment."

Janssen had retooled his farm last year, specializing even more on strawberries. "We stopped growing tomatoes for now in 2020. Greenhouse technology for growing tomatoes has made great strides in recent years. My facilities were simply no longer profitable enough in comparison. For strawberries, however, they still function very well."

But that doesn't mean the end of tomatoes at the Janssen facility by any means. "My son Dominik is already active in the business, so I prefer to leave the large-scale modernization to the next generation," he concludes.
