"This winter season has got off to a good start with satisfactory results for spinach. Sales have increased by 15% compared to last season. Lamb's lettuce has recovered after a slight delay in sales and is now also showing a 15% increase compared to the beginning of 2020", said Alberto Nocera of Italian Agrieuropa. "Until mid-December, sales of lamb’s lettuce and spinach were slow due to the mild climate throughout Europe. This resulted in Germany, our main customer, marketing its own crops until mid-December and not turning to us. Overall, the winter season was fairly regular for all our crops and prices were good." Together with lamb's lettuce, courgettes are part of the company's product assortment available all year round. The current courgette campaign has seen an increase in production areas from 27 to 40 hectares. The demand is mainly for the medium to large 14-21cm size and we are very satisfied about this trend," continued Nocera. "In terms of packaging, we have something new. We have acquired a heat-shrinking machine to guarantee sealed, practical and resistant packages. The aim is to provide a less perishable and more aesthetically pleasing product. The transparent film shows the product and ensures a longer shelf-life. In Agrieuropa, things have been pretty hectic for a few weeks now because of the preparations for the last production cycle of the winter crops. In addition, some fields are already ready for the transplanting of the watermelons, which will kick-start the summer season. "Temperatures are a bit milder now and therefore there will be more product. Prices will then have to be adjusted, as climate is a factor that has a great influence on both crops and demand. After all, it is well known that cultivation is slower when temperatures are cold."
Fortunately, we were able to survive Cyclone Burian, which did not reduce demand or slow down the harvest. The coronavirus didn't affect the company's production either, as 80% of our work is with foreign markets, which means that demand is never significantly reduced.
"In order to better respond to customer needs, we will introduce a new reference for the next winter season, namely spring onion. This is intended for foreign markets," concluded Nocera.
