The tomato production continues in summer and winter in 24 modern geothermal greenhouses in the Sandikli district of Afyon, although the temperature drops to 25 degrees below zero in winter times.
Sandikli Mayor Mustafa Col: "35% of the all geothermal greenhouses in Turkey are located in the Sandikli district. Geothermal water is used in greenhouses after being used for heating, The high daily temperature difference in the district increases the quality of the tomatoes grown. Our tomatoes have a shelf life of 29 days. Vine tomatoes grown in our greenhouses are exported to 30 countries. Our goal by 2024 is to bring an area of more than 2 million square meters to geothermal greenhouse production in the city."
Mucahit Gursel, an official of a geothermal greenhouse in the district, said that they have been producing 60 tons of vine tomatoes in a glass greenhouse since 2016.
Mentioning that they cultivate tomatoes in their greenhouses with organic and good agricultural practices, Gursel said, "Our seedlings are planted in the coconut shell. They start to give products for a period of 2 months. During the flowering period, the plant is fertilized naturally by bees. In other words, we do not use any chemicals."
