New line of sustainable, organic greenhouse growing media

Gro-Bark, a custom soil and growing media blender, recently announced the launch of a new line of greenhouse growing media which emphasizes greater sustainability of ingredients and is certified organic. This initiative is one of the company’s most recent strategies to further enhance their sustainability standards, and solidify their position as Canada’s largest resource recovery company.

Demand for peat as a raw material for the production of growing media has the potential to more than double by 2050, and experts have hypothesized increases in demand of more than 700% for coco products. These commonly used growing media ingredients will by no means be sufficient to cover demand in 2050. However, this situation will open up opportunities for innovation, and novel sustainable raw materials will be a large part of that.

Gro-Bark has been partnering with the horticultural industry in Ontario for over 40 years and is strategically positioned to capitalize on the innovative media market, with several composting facilities and aged bark reclamation sites. The launch of their new growing media line highlights this expertise through the utilization of sustainable and organic materials such as composted sawmill waste, wood fibres, compost and aged bark. Thus decreasing reliance on less sustainable traditional materials such as peat and perlite.

Sustainable bio-resources such as wood and compost will be the basis for most future growing media recipes, with ecological issues such as climate change, carbon dioxide emissions and the destruction of natural habitats driving this transition. Gro-Bark will continue to support greenhouse and nursery growers throughout this transition by continuing to expand it’s list of sustainable ingredients and ensuring the supply of reliable, tested, high quality growing media.
