Tomato grower Schenkeveld is a growing company in the Westland, Midden-Delfland, and Schiphol region. In order to grow steady but surely, management decided to allow Piet van der Wel, Site Manager of Schenkeveld Schiphol, to join Schenkeveld's management. He became COO of Schenkeveld Schiphol on January 1st, 2021.
In 2021, Schenkeveld will expand this site. This year the third greenhouse (Kas Zuid) of 11 ha is being built. A new step for growth after a merger between Kwekerij de Kabel and Schenkeveld in 2019, and previous construction activities at Schenkeveld Schiphol.
Piet on the land on which Schenkeveld will continue to expand their Schiphol site.
"Joining Schenkeveld's management is a good step for me," Piet replies. "I've been familiar with horticulture and cultivating tomatoes since I was a child because of my parents' company. The changes in processes and the conversations at the kitchen table, I've seen them all up close.
A few years ago, the choice was made not to continue in the family business. Among other things, the high degree of scaling up in greenhouse horticulture was the basis for this. It's great that this will be my role at Schenkeveld."
Rejuvenation
Piet van der Wel made the transition from bQurius to Schenkeveld to be directly part of the construction team for the Schiphol site. He has been involved from day one and has given his all, according to the growers in the announcement of the news. Like the company, Piet has developed himself these last years.
Piet also brings something youthful to management. His horticulture background and his experience in sharpening processes to improve the organization through data analysis and Power BI, among others, make him stand out. He is now doing this for the Schiphol site, but Schenkeveld also wants to use this knowledge for the other sites.
Traineeship
Piet is an example of someone who developed himself within Schenkeveld and in the future, they will also offer others that opportunity. Talent development is an important part of the company. "There are always development opportunities for both permanent and temporary employees, and not to forget the high-school kids who work at Schenkeveld."
