Idromeccanica Lucchini

New greenhouse types available to meet harsh climatic conditions

Research, innovation and internationalization are the key words that characterize Idromeccanica Lucchini. The world is constantly changing and so are its people' needs, especially when it comes to food. Growers must therefore keep up with new trends and be able to put quality first, following economic trends.

Moreover, the current pandemic has accelerated processes of social and cultural change already underway, making the need for modernization increasingly urgent. For this reason, even the tools used to facilitate and improve agriculture must be continually updated and must be conceived with the modularity that can make them capable of adapting, with few but substantial modifications, to all international contexts and different climatic conditions.

The international experience
Idromeccanica Lucchini is present not only in Italy, but also abroad. This has led the company to face many different challenges, constantly testing the company's ability to deal with new problems. It is therefore necessary to rethink continuously the design and production of greenhouses that can overcome these challenges.

In addition to the case studies carried out in Finland (see Freshplaza of 11/16/2020), Idromeccanica Lucchini has recently worked in California and South Africa, in the tree nursery and grape sector. In this case, the work has evolved from previous experimentation already carried out in Southern Italy for the cultivation of "Pachino" tomatoes. This could lead to successful results thanks to the possibility of adapting technologies that have already been applied and tested in different areas.

The most recent experiments of Lucchini's hydromechanics are exposed below.

The advantages of photoselective filters
Choosing the right plastic foils to cover greenhouses can benefit the quantity and quality of the crop. This is one of the research and innovation activities carried out by Idromeccanica Lucchini to meet the needs of the growers. By filtering the light of the plastic films that cover the greenhouses, the life span of tomatoes and leafy vegetables can be extended. The use of the most suitable film for tomatoes resulted in a larger water mass and a redder color. The yield is increased by 3-4% and the tomatoes have a longer shelf life, making logistics and distribution easier.

An open roof is better
No, we're not talking about a sports car! One of Lucchini's latest innovations is the open roof greenhouse which provides the opportunity to open the roof thanks to the Open Sky System technology. This innovation is the result of years of experience in Italy and abroad, where the climate fluctuates greatly during the different phases of the year. In addition to ensuring that the greenhouse is only covered and functional when it is needed, this system allows the greenhouse to have a longer life, because it is not in use when it is least needed.

Protection against rain and hail
The latest innovations will not take long to reach the market. Because of the change in climatic conditions, which has caused more frequent and heavy rains and hailstorms, a need for those products has emerged. In order to protect the orchards, a new type of cover with a special foil was created. It is a very thick net, referred to as Arrigoni SpA,  that protects the plants while ensuring air circulation. Another advantage is that these covers allow a shade percentage of 20%.
