While in Northern Europe the first frosts have arrived, around the Mediterranean the strawberry season is already at full speed again, despite difficult weather conditions.
Leon van den Hombergh of Frankort & Koning B.V. reports: "It is noticeable that the market has waited until the strawberries were available in larger volumes. The retail trade has reacted immediately with promotions and the sales are very positive."
Currently, the company, based at the Venlo Fresh Park, receives airfreighted goods from Egypt three times a week: "We have been working there for years with our regular producers. Quality and safety are therefore guaranteed."
Strawberry sales benefit from the trendy product: "Berry consumption has been rising sharply for years and strawberry sales are also benefiting from this. We are planning for Egyptian goods until the end of January, then our suppliers in Morocco and Spain will pick up the slack. But at the moment we are still very satisfied with the quality, look and taste of the Egyptian strawberries!"
