Russian greenhouse expands with 5 ha for seedling production

New greenhouses of 750 square meters each, have been constructed in the second department of a greenhouse complex in Russia to replace the old ones, built in the 1970s.

The enterprise has long been feeling a need for growing seedlings. The assortment has been expanded every year, as Teplichny is trying to provide novelties for beautifying the city, therefore the acreage is becoming an issue - so it was logical to think of expansion.

It was planned that a big complex with an acreage of 1 ha would be launched this year, but the pandemic has made it necessary to make adjustments to the plans. The suppliers could not deliver the equipment on time as the borders were closed, thus the project was postponed to the spring of 2021. Once such a complex is constructed, the enterprise would reach a new level of automation as all the seedlings will be planted and grown with minimal human intrusion.

Since the acreage issue is still on the plate, plastic foil greenhouses have been constructed. The foil coverage is treated with a substance reducing vulnerability to ultraviolet and retaining high elasticity, which means that the foil would last for at least five years.

The greenhouses have optimal conditions for vegetable and flower seedlings growing. First, they allow air flow on all sides, creating proper conditions for hardening off the seedlings. Second, they serve as “thermoses”, as air flows between the layers of the foil, reducing the chargeable heat compared to the regular foil or glass.
