Horticulture New Zealand has released another Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) video, this time explaining the scheme’s importance to the Pacific.
‘The RSE scheme is immensely important to the Pacific, providing thousands of people with the money and skills to change lives and whole communities,’ says HortNZ Chief Executive, Mike Chapman.
‘Money earned and skills learned in New Zealand are applied in the Pacific, to create businesses and build infrastructure, like stormproof houses and community facilities.'
‘In 2019, returning RSE workers earned on average $20.61 an hour but during peak times like harvest, experienced workers earn as much as $30.00 an hour.'
‘The scheme is tightly controlled by the New Zealand Government. RSE employers must meet standards for accommodation, transport, community facilities and pastoral care.’
Mike says the RSE scheme has been running since 2007.
‘The scheme is of considerable importance to Pacific nation economies as well as to horticulture in New Zealand, enabling the industry to grow and employ thousands of New Zealanders in permanent roles.'
‘What’s more, the RSE scheme has been recognised by the World Bank as being one of the world’s best migrant labour programmes.’
