Another 20 hectares of high-tech greenhouses for tomatoes

"We currently own 10 hectares of greenhouses, which will become 20 in 2021 and 30 in 2022. We are also focusing on widening our tomato range," explains Alessio Orlandi, sales manager of Fri-El.

"Our H2Orto brand is getting increasingly popular because our produce stands out on the market thanks to its high-quality, packaging and the fact that it is nickel-free. The company has decided to keep investing and work is under way for the first 10 hectares that will become productive in 2021, to which we will add another 10 hectares."

H2Orto is focusing a lot on packaging as well: something that is not only nice to look at, but useful as well, as it can convey information and protect the produce. "Some solutions are so innovative that buyers are very impressed, especially in some countries. The German retail chain in particular seems to have welcomed them." R-Pet solutions are used in addition to cardboard.

H2Orto also focuses on supplying constant quality throughout the year. "Clients know that we always supply high-quality produce, which in turn helps them retain final consumers."

"In addition to traditional bunch tomatoes, we grow ribbed, beefsteak, cocktail and plum tomatoes and are looking to supply the market uniformly all year round."

By visiting the greenhouses, you cannot help but notice the synchrony that regulates all operations. Each row has a microchip employees "read" via a smartphone, so as to keep track of which operations are performed on which row every day (i.e. flower thinning, defoliation and turning).

"It is now possible to have a constant high-quality supply of Italian tomatoes. We have the right mentality to invest not only in more greenhouses, but also in product and process innovation."
