Russian greenhouse takes up lean production

The Pensa greenhouse complex in Russia is the first agricultural enterprise in the region joining in the national project Productivity and Employment Support. Currently, the greenhouse associates are learning to make the production lean. Experts of the regional center for competence get the associates acquainted with the technologies of lean production. They have created a work group of 10 people and have started the educational process.

Ms. Elena Shanina, executive director of LLC Pensa Greenhouse Complex: “Currently, the revenue per associate comprises 16,099 euro per year. Naturally, we do not set targets here but we would like to raise it at least by 30%. This presupposes production volume increase, including produce quality improvement and, consequently, entering another price segment. This is our main goal.”

Mr. Sergey Tokarev, the head of the regional Center for Competence in Productivity: “The internal trainers of the regional center for competence teach the group the basics of lean production, of carrying over projects on improvement, of lean production key elements. It is done with the purpose that in future experts and the working group could talk the same language and understand what is expected of them.”

Only one class has been conducted so far and it has already addressed some production issues. For instance, in the fourth department idle time without crops has been shortened. Earlier the crops from two hectares were harvested and replaced all at once, while now it is done step by step.

Ahead, there is half a year of theoretical studies and practical application before the results can be seen. According to the forecast, productivity should increase by 5% then and would continue increasing.
