In Poland, retailer Biedronka has been accused of misleading buyers by selling fruits and vegetables from other countries, while indicating that they were domestic products, as reported by TVP Info.
It is worth noting that Biedronka is a network with more than 3 thousand discount stores in more than a thousand locations in Poland. It is the largest commercial retail chain in the country.
It appears that Biedronka stores were selling greenhouse cucumbers from Ukraine, carrots from Belgium and the Netherlands, Italian cucumbers and cabbage from France as if they were Polish products.
Because of this, the head of the antitrust department, Tomasz Khrostny, filed a lawsuit against Jeronimo Martins Polska, which owns the chain of stores.
"I accused Jeronimo Martins Polska of violating the interests of consumers by misleading them about the country of origin of fruits and vegetables. For many, this is key information that can determine the purchase of a product," said Khrostny.
According to him, consumers are increasingly guided by economic patriotism in their choice and willingly choose domestic goods.
Inaccurate information in Biedronka stores may influence their purchase decision. Jeronimo Martins Polska faces a fine of up to 10% of the annual turnover for misleading consumers.
