Grid bucket for snack tomatoes from Pöppelmann FAMAC®

Adapted packaging - now even more sustainable and visually attractive

Resource-saving production, secure packaging, attractively presented: Pöppelmann FAMAC®, specialised in plastic packaging for the food and pharmaceutical industry, and MERULIN Gartenbauservice LLC & Co. have jointly developed an innovative packaging option for snack tomatoes. This packaging is a real hit, due to material savings of up to 30 percent - with unchanged performance in terms of product protection, automation, logistics and marketing suitability.

Safely and attractively packaged - significantly less material
The Snack Tomato Bucket, a packaging that is proven in the food trade, is now available in a more resource-saving and visually even more attractive design: Pöppelmann FAMAC® presents a transparent plastic bucket with a coloured handle and a capacity of 870 millilitres. The bucket has an injection moulded grid structure. Material savings of up to 30 percent can be achieved. With a weight of only 21 grams, the packaging is significantly lighter than its full-surface models.

Nevertheless, the bucket still has the necessary stability and machinability. The lattice structure also enables optimised ventilation of the food during refrigerated storage. If necessary, the packaging can be provided with a pre-printed label during the moulding process, using the In-Mould-Labelling (IML) method. This label is attached to the pail to form an inseparable unit and is thus securely fixed and resistant to moisture and temperature. The new lattice structure bucket is closed with a lid made of virgin fibre cardboard, which can be printed over the entire surface. Overall, the packaging proves to be particularly economical all along the line: the reduced use of materials not only saves resources. The lower weight also reduces logistics costs and DSD fees and results in CO2 savings during transport.

Interdisciplinary project by two specialists
The snack tomato bucket in grid structure was developed in a cooperation of Pöppelmann FAMAC® and MERULIN Gartenbauservice LLC, which supplies horticultural businesses with products from renowned manufacturers in the green industry. Pöppelmann FAMAC® as a competent and experienced manufacturer of food packaging took over the professional and fast development of the design - supported by in-house services like rapid prototyping for the production of prototypes in 3D printing - up to serial production in injection moulding.

As a specialist for horticultural supplies, MERULIN supported the project with extensive industry know-how and was advised for the project by its own customer from the tomato production. The result is a functional and attractive packaging that meets all the requirements of the trade - and at the same time helps to conserve resources.

The first customers have already switched to the Pöppelmann FAMAC® snack tomato bucket, so that the first examples of these can already be found in food retail outlets.
